Cart and checkout

The cart is the last step before checkout, so small improvements here have an outsized effect. Backline gives you a polished cart with four settings that shape how it feels and how much shoppers buy: how the cart opens, a free shipping progress bar, a gift wrapping product, and pre-order labels. All four sit in one group and take a few minutes to set. Cart settings covers each one field by field.

Backline shows the cart in one of two ways, and you pick the one that fits your store.

  • Drawer: the cart slides in over the current page and the shopper stays where they are. This is the default and the best choice for most stores, because it keeps people browsing. It works on every page, including collection grids and search results.
  • Page: the shopper goes to a full cart page instead. This suits stores where people review a large or detailed order before checkout, with quantities and totals on one screen.

To set it, go to Online Store → Themes → Customize, open Theme settings, and choose Cart.

  • Free shipping threshold: enter the order value that earns free shipping and the cart shows a progress bar toward it. A shopper who is a few euros short will often add one more item. Use the same number as the shipping rate in your Shopify admin so the cart and the checkout agree, and set it a little above your typical order value.
  • Gift wrapping product: create a product for your wrapping service, price it at what you charge, then choose it in this setting. Shoppers can add wrapping from the cart itself, at the moment they are already thinking about who the order is for.

Use these with a light touch. One clear nudge works better than several competing ones.

If you keep selling a variant after its stock runs out, turn on pre-order labels. The add to cart button and the stock line then tell the shopper they are ordering ahead, on the product page and in the cart alike. Add the expected shipping date to the product description as well, and you will answer the question before anyone has to email you.

The drawer pairs well with quick view, which opens a compact buy dialog straight from a product card. Together they mean a shopper can browse a collection, pick a size, add it, and carry on scrolling in one unbroken run. Turn quick view on in Theme settings → Product cards, and see Product card settings for when it helps and when the full product page does more selling.

Checkout itself is handled by Shopify, so it is fast, secure, and familiar to shoppers. Your job in the theme is to make the path to it obvious: a visible cart, a clear total, and a checkout button that is easy to reach on every screen.
