Sections and the editor

Backline builds your pages out of sections: self-contained pieces like a slideshow, a featured collection, or a row of text and images. You add, reorder, and style them in Shopify’s theme editor, with no code. This is where most of your store takes shape.

Open the theme editor

1. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes.
2. Find your theme and click Customize.
3. Use the template menu at the top to move between your homepage, product pages, collections, and more.

The panel on the left shows a tree of everything on the current page. That tree is your map: click any section to open its settings, and the preview updates as you go.

Add and arrange sections

• Add a section: click Add section and pick from the list. It drops into the page, ready to configure.
• Reorder: drag a section up or down to change where it sits on the page.
• Blocks: many sections hold blocks, the smaller pieces inside them, such as individual slides or feature columns. You add, reorder, and remove blocks the same way.
• Hide instead of delete: you can hide a section to take it off the storefront while keeping its settings for later.

Tip

Build your homepage like a story. Lead with a strong banner, follow with your best products, add a section that builds trust such as reviews or your brand story, then close with a clear next step. A focused page beats a long one every time.

Browse the section library

Backline gives you around 38 sections you can add freely to any page, alongside the fixed pieces that come with each template. They are grouped by the job they do, so start from what the page needs to say rather than from a long alphabetical list:

• Storytelling sections: text, images, quotes, and answers that explain your brand.
• Media sections: banners, slideshows, video, and galleries for your big visual moments.
• Product and collection sections: the rows and rails that put things you sell in front of shoppers.
• Conversion and utility sections: signup forms, enquiries, timed promotions, and practical extras.
• Header, footer, and bars: the pieces that stay with a shopper on every page.

Shared section options

Nearly every section shares a familiar set of controls, so once you learn one, you know them all:

• Heading and text: an optional eyebrow, heading, and intro.
• Color scheme: apply any scheme you set up in Colors and define in Color scheme settings.
• Layout: width, columns, and alignment where they apply.
• Padding: top and bottom spacing, working from the defaults in Layout and spacing.

Because that set repeats, you can decide your page rhythm once: alternate two color schemes so each section reads as its own moment, and keep padding even except where you want a deliberate pause.

A few surfaces have more depth, and each has its own page:

• Cart and checkout

Add your own with Custom Liquid and apps

Need something bespoke? Add a Custom Liquid section, or a Custom Liquid block inside an existing section, to drop in your own markup or a snippet an app gave you, without touching theme files. Use the block when the addition belongs inside a section you already have, and the full section when it needs its own space on the page.

Product pages also accept app blocks, so reviews, size guides, and similar tools slot straight into the page tree. Add them with Add block on the product template, then drag them to sit exactly where you want relative to the price and buy button.

Note

A template can hold up to 25 sections. In practice, far fewer makes for a faster, clearer page, so reach for that ceiling only when you truly need to.
